Meet the farmers

meet the farmers at luna farm

Fred and Amy met in 2013 here in Humboldt county and have been farming together since! Based in the Eel river valley, Luna Farm sits nestled between the Humboldt Redwoods State Park and the main stem of the Eel River, on a verdant flood plain. They supply Humboldt County with organic + dry farmed fruits and vegetables nearly all year round. Together they grow a diverse amount of crops including seasonal fruits such as apples, pears, peaches, nectarines, figs, & melons; summer crops such as: heirloom tomatoes, corn, squash, cucumbers, peppers, and cut flowers; and of course PNW winter staples including: brassicas, onions, carrots, beets and culinary herbs.

  • Amy is a lover of the obscure + the outdoors. She has a fascination and passion for growing produce with a unique history. Amy grows varietals such as dragons tongue flat beans - a delicate variegated bean, a mix of tender asian greens that can be easily added to any dish, and her favorite the fatalii pepper- a citrusy hot chili pepper commonly used in South American and African cuisines! She is a home cook, grandmother and vibrant community member. She is grateful that she gets to work outdoors every day to grow food for her community and her family. Amy loves the community connection in growing food for local restaurants, chefs, grocery stores, Food for People, and our schools!

  • German born, Fred hails from a family of farmers, but it wasn’t until his 30’s that he began seeking out knowledge in the field. Fred initially began farming across Germany and South America. His travel bug brought him into the backyards of Humboldt county where he began market farming in multiple neighborhood yards throughout Willow Creek. Fred speaks four languages and has a vast knowledge of incredible cultural varietals. He is known locally as the King of Kohlrabi (a German brassica staple used similarly to potatoes). Since meeting Amy they have relocated to the Eel River valley where they farm together today. Fred finds great joy being outdoors, growing food and being on his tractor. His zeal for life is as contagious as his smile.

  • the farm cats hold a special place at Luna Fam and in all the hearts of those who have visited. They are both charming, great mousers and incredible comdedic relief. You can find them laying in a warm patch of dit or digging for gophers in the field. Be sure to give them a scritch on the head next time you are at the farm!
